ASBMR Fund for Research and Education Young Investigator Awards
Through the gifts from our generous donors dedicated to supporting young investigators, the ASBMR Fund for Research and Education provides two awards annually to two young investigators who are awarded based on their outstanding abstracts presented at the ASBMR Annual Meeting. See below for the stories on how these awards have helped the recipients with their careers:
2023 ASBMR Fund for Research and Education Young Investigator Awardees
The recipients were Sanchita Agarwal, MS, Division of Endocrinology, Department of Medicine, Columbia University for the abstract, "Women with Pregnancy and Lactation associated Osteoporosis (PLO) Have Substantial Volumetric BMD Deficits at the Spine by Central QCT" and Eren Bora Yilmaz, Christian-Albrechts-Universität Kiel for the abstract, "Automated Deep Learning-based CT-Scout View Assessment of Prevalent Vertebral Fractures."

The recipient of the award was Daniel Dapaah, University of Waterloo for the abstract, "The Role of AGEs in Bone Fragility Associated with Type 2 Diabetes and Chronic Kidney Disease."

The recipient of the award was Maisa Monseff Silva, MD, for the abstract, "MMP13 Regulation of Perilacunar Remodeling is Cathepsin K-Dependent and Required for Lactation-Induced Osteocytic Osteolysis and Trabecular Bone Loss."

The recipients of the two awards were Yuki Arai, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston School of Dentistry for the abstract, "Bisphophonates induce permanent defects in tooth root formation and long-term disruption in tooth eruption by inhibiting PTHrP-expressing dental follicle in growing molars" and Lea Hanna Doumit, University Paris Cité for the abstract, "Role of Osteoblasts in the Systemic Control of Breast Cancer Progression."

The recipient of the award was Mariana Moraes de Lima Perini, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis for the abstract, "Primary cilia in osteoblasts and osteocytes are required for skeletal development and mechanotransduction."

The recipients of the two awards were Roy Byung-Jun Choi, Indiana University School of Medicine for the abstract, "NOTUM deletion from skeletal cells increases cortical bone formation" and Pallavi Bhatia, University of Sheffield for the abstract "Fracture Risk in Parkinson's Disease - the Role of Bone Density, Falls Risk and Muscle Strength."

The recipients of the two awards were Mackenzie Hagan, Augusta University for the abstract, "Impaired pericellular matrix production and selection for enhanced cell membrane repair with aging may impair responses to mechanical loading in the aging skeleton" and Owen Cronin, Ph.D., University of Edinburgh for the abstract Evolution of early Paget’s disease in SQSTM1 mutation carriers: baseline analysis of the ZiPP study."

"As a recipient of the 2019 ASBMR Fund for Research and Education Diversity Young Investigator award, I was able to attend the 2019 Annual Meeting in Orlando and present my work! This award not only made this conference possible for me, but made me feel very appreciated by the society. I think this award symbolizes ASBMR's dedication to improving diversity among young researchers, and throughout the society. The recipients of the two awards were Amy T. Bunyamin, University of Saskatchewan for the abstract "Reliability of annual changes and monitoring time intervals for bone strength, size, density and micro-architectural development at the distal radius and tibia in children: A 1-year HR-pQCT follow-up" and Jayenth K. Mayur, M.B.S., Rutgers University Medical School for the abstract "Vanadyl Acetylacetonate Increases Bone Formation and Inhibits Osteoclast Differentiation in a Diabetes-Related Osteoporotic Rat Model."

2017 Fund for Research and Education Young Investigator Awardees
The recipients of the two awards were Jasna Aleksova, Ph.D., Endocrinology Fellow, Monash Health, Australia and Thomas Funck-Brentano, M.D., Ph.D., Post-Doctoral Fellow, Centre for Bone and Arthritis Research, Institute of Medicine, Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenberg, Sweden.
"It was a great privilege and honor to receive the ASBMR Fund for Research and Education Young Investigators Award. As an emerging researcher it was incredibly encouraging and motivating to receive such a prestigious award recognizing the hard work behind the scenes. The awards ceremony was also a great opportunity to meet with other young researchers and engage with more senior members of the ASBMR. 2016 Fund for Research and Education Young Investigator Awardees
The recipients of the two awards were Yuvaraj Sambandam, Ph.D., Medical University of South Carolina for the abstract, "MVNP Modulation of NFAM1 Signaling Enhances Osteoclast Formation and Bone Resorption Activity in Paget's Diseas of Bone" and Chantal Wiepjes, VU Medisch Centrum for the abstract, "The Effects of Cross-sex Hormonal Treatments in Transgender Persons on their Bone Mineral Density: a 1 year Prospective Observational Study."
